THE OKLUS RETROFIT UNIT

One existing street light. A new environmental platform.

OKLUS is being developed to turn suitable existing lighting columns into visible, serviceable environmental infrastructure for structured public-realm pilots.

Retrofit-firstBegin with suitable assets already serving the street.
Pilot-readyDesigned for controlled deployment, learning and review.
Service-ledMaintenance and living-media refresh form part of the model.
Evidence-awareClaims follow measured outcomes, context and limitations.

THE INVESTMENT LOGIC

New public value without beginning again.

OKLUS starts with infrastructure already embedded in everyday routes. The ambition is a repeatable platform that can move from a carefully defined pilot into a serviceable product and delivery model.

01

Retrofit advantage

A concept shaped around suitable existing columns, helping reduce avoidable replacement and civil disruption.

02

Recognisable platform

A consistent product language creates visibility, trust and a foundation for repeatable manufacture.

03

Lifecycle relationship

Inspection, living-media care and service history extend the proposition beyond installation.

04

Learning creates value

Each structured pilot can improve the product, delivery process and evidence available for the next decision.

PRODUCT ANATOMY

Designed to look integrated, because it is.

The architecture brings engineered structure, living media and service access into one civic form.

01

Existing lighting column

The familiar lighting function continues above the retrofit where the selected column and site are suitable.

02

Ground-start aluminium sleeve

A durable architectural body creates a premium finish and contains the serviceable internal assembly.

03

Distinctive diagonal transition

The sheared edge gives OKLUS a recognisable identity and marks the meeting of structure and living media.

04

Replaceable living-media zone

The planted section is treated as an operational component to inspect, refresh and adapt to local conditions.

05

Contained invertebrate habitat cartridge

A removable lower compartment being developed to test ecologist-informed 3D-printed habitat geometries within a serviceable public-realm unit.

06

Optional elevated solitary bee module

A future nesting module for selected suitable posts, subject to orientation, light, forage, maintenance and specialist ecological review.

07

Future pilot-support capability

The platform is intended to accommodate evolving monitoring, maintenance and evaluation requirements.

MODULAR BIODIVERSITY CAPABILITY

Another environmental function, built into the same retrofit platform.

Selected units could explore discreet habitat opportunities for urban pollinators and beneficial invertebrates without changing the established OKLUS civic form.

Habitat features would remain location-dependent, ecologist-informed and subject to lighting, surrounding habitat, maintenance and evidence requirements. Public concept imagery deliberately avoids revealing internal engineering details.

  • Integrated habitat zone
  • Minimal visible access
  • Replaceable components where appropriate
  • Ecological siting review
  • Lighting context considered
  • Evidence before claims

VISIBLE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Made for routes people already use.

School routes, residential streets, parks, high streets and regeneration areas each bring different needs. The location shapes the pilot, while the product remains recognisably OKLUS.

FROM PILOT TO PORTFOLIO

Scale follows evidence, not expectation.

The route towards repeatable deployment is intentionally staged. Each step creates a decision point, protects credibility and helps strengthen the commercial model.

01

Define

Agree the route, public-value question, responsibilities and measures.

02

Install

Survey suitable columns and deliver a controlled retrofit pilot.

03

Operate

Inspect, maintain and record the real service requirements.

04

Evaluate

Report findings, limitations, public response and lessons learned.

05

Refine

Improve the product, service model and next deployment decision.

MORE THAN A PHYSICAL PRODUCT

Three connected layers of long-term value.

The opportunity combines a distinctive physical platform with repeatable service activity and structured pilot learning.

PHYSICAL PLATFORM

Modular retrofit hardware

A recognisable system intended for suitable existing columns, repeatable manufacture and practical component access.

  • Architectural aluminium body
  • Replaceable living-media zone
  • Future monitoring readiness
SERVICE LAYER

Inspection and maintenance

A planned operating relationship covering condition, cleaning, living-media refresh and recorded interventions.

  • Defined responsibilities
  • Repeatable service workflow
  • Visible asset history
LEARNING LAYER

Pilot evidence and insight

A structured record connecting installation, maintenance, local context and agreed evaluation questions.

  • Clear baseline and measures
  • Transparent limitations
  • Better next-stage decisions

MAINTENANCE BY DESIGN

Credibility begins after the launch photograph.

Public infrastructure needs to remain presentable, understandable and serviceable over time.

OKLUS treats inspection, cleaning, living-media refresh and intervention records as core parts of the proposition. Pilot delivery should establish the real intervals, resources and responsibilities needed for each route.

  • Visual and structural checks
  • Cleaning and presentation
  • Living-media review
  • Component access
  • Service history
  • Evaluation notes

SPECIALIST DELIVERY ECOSYSTEM

Focused product leadership, supported by specialist capability.

OKLUS is developing a partner-led ecosystem around installation, living media and responsible material thinking. This keeps the core proposition focused while bringing credible specialist input into delivery.

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT POSITION

Ambitious in design. Disciplined in its claims.

OKLUS is being developed for structured pilot evaluation. The intended product and operating model are presented clearly without treating future outcomes as proven facts.
